Thrifting and Hitting Yard Sales at 100 degrees Farenheit

This last week has definitely been a cooker! And I don't mean grilling out - I mean if you go outside you will be the one that is being cooked (at least where I'm at anyway). This didn't make for very enjoyable shopping at garage and yard sales. I went to a quite a few - but the cost of baking myself obviously wasn't worth it because most of my finds came from nice air-conditioned thrift stores and estate sales.

I picked up a fun assortment of books from a thrift store I don't usually go to - but I had to go way out there for work (no I wasn't thrifting on the job!), so I stopped in. I've enjoyed looking through "Things to Make and Do". It is a 1960 printing of a 1952 book - apparently back then everyone had a lot of corks, empty spools of thread and clothespins laying around the house. I think it is funny how some things that used to be used every day - like old fashioned clothes pins and pipe-cleaners are now largely just purchased for kids crafts. I also really love the Muppet book. I have come across a couple others in this series and what I like about them is how the water-color illustrations really capture how the Muppets look and are not cartoon versions of them.

I also found a couple more Rainbow Brite Color Kids - I don't know why all of a sudden I keep finding these! Canary Yellow even still has her sprite attached!  Some other fun finds included a Baby Miss Piggy plush, Care Bear and Strawberry Shortcake cups, and a few little toys.

Finally - I purchased one item at a HUGE estate sale. There was a lot of cool stuff, but most of the toys and books were either overpriced or very well loved (in other words: worn to shreds). I thought this guide to Disneyland from 1962 was super awesome! I love old stuff from the Disney parks, and I rarely find any. I especially like how there was a "coming soon" page which described the Haunted Mansion and New Orleans Square. Fun stuff!

  3. Love that guide to Disneyland! That's a great buy!

Lately most of the big thrifts I go to have had A/C issues so they are hot, too. Those with the A/C working are my new favorites. :)

  4. Yikes, no air conditioning in a thrift store is pretty bad news. The one I go to the most is always packed with people and there's not much space in there - I can't imagine what it would be like with no A/C! Though at one thrift store I went to the lights went out one time. I was in the back corner of the store and there were no emergency lights. Luckily the electricity came back on in a couple of minutes or I would have had to feel my way out of the store.

  5. I found some 80s toys this weekend, too. It's funny how we often find things in groups. I always seems to find a bunch of one type of thing, even at different sales and shops.
